The Lab Assistant II will be responsible for phlebotomy and processing of appropriate samples for testing, to include:1) computer inquiry and entry to maintain patient demographics as well as test ordering details in multiple computer systems in accordance with compliance guidelines; 2.) Processing and preparing samples for testing at PRMCE laboratories and Patient Service Centers. 3.) Processing, preparing and packaging samples for delivery to reference labs. Work is conducted in accordance with all regulatory accreditation agency requirements. Processes all specimen types and sources to be analyzed by the laboratory including blood, urine, cultures and other body fluids. Phlebotomy procedures are required which includes venous and capillary punctures, and urine collections for medical and legal testing procedures (Legal collections depending on location).
In this position you will:
Demonstrates age specific patient care considerations for the population served.
Demonstrates application of knowledge, skills and behaviors in the physician, motor/sensory, cognitive, psychosocial, patient and family education areas based on PEMC age specific care competency assessment tool
Perform Phlebotomy of Patients.
Perform venipuncture and capillary procedures on pediatric and adult inpatient and outpatient populations.
Blood draws on neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients, are completed within appropriate time frames, using appropriate safety devices or tools for the situation.
Reports to laboratory upon completion of assignments.
Communicates with appropriate staff regarding difficulties in drawing blood. Draw lists are reviewed on time; STATS and timed samples are collected and processed according to policy.
Perform Data Entry.
Operates multi-computer system to include the laboratory information system (LIS).
Completes manually or by computer system, orders for esoteric testing referred outside the laboratory, which may include test research, documentation, special transportation measures, sample preparation, packing, etc.
Uses hospital and laboratory information system programs, to include (in the pre-analytic phase) sample labeling, log-in, test cancellation, test modification, test add-on, etc, and in the post-Analytic phase, final sample disposition into the sample inventory system/storage.
Accurate and complete information is entered at registration and order entry.
Collect ABNs on Medicare patients at our Patient Service center.
Ensures Correct Patient/Specimen Identification.
Correct patient accounts are selected and identified in the computer systems. A positive identification system using two patient identifiers (see laboratory policy) is used when identifying the proper account and labeling of each specimen.
When performing phlebotomy, the patient will be identified by verbal acknowledgment by the phlebotomist and the wrist band or face sheet will be scanned with the Carefusion PDA or Desk top version to ensure positive patient identification.
Timely and accurate order processing functions performed.
Specimens that are analyzed by the laboratory are processed including but not limited to blood, urine, cultures and body fluids.
Samples and paperwork are prepared to be sent to reference laboratories according to reference manual requirements.
Processes samples so that specimen viability is always maintained: may include communication to couriers to route specimens in a timely manner.
Processes specimens to include: labeling, centrifugation, aliquoting, preserving and dispatching for testing.
Specimens are distributed to appropriate area, and transferred in the LIS as appropriate.
Performs data entry in multiple computer systems.
Required qualifications for this position include:
Completion of a Phlebotomy course (including completion of a 4 week internship in Phlebotomy in a clinical laboratory setting) or completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Course or six months of related laboratory work experience and eligible for DOH Medical Assistant-Phlebotomy license
If job assignment requires driving to another facility, complete Defensive Driving course within 6 months of hire and every three years thereafter
CPR certification is also required. CPR training completed by 1st month of employment
Active DOH Medical Assistant-Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant-Certified or Registered license (which includes the 7 hours of Blood Borne Pathogens training)
