Providence Health & Services Coder Abstractor in Everett, Washington
Providence St. Joseph Health is calling a Coder Abstractor to our HIM Coding Abstracting NWR in Everett, WA.
We are seeking a Coder Abstractor to be responsible for the coding/abstracting of acute care services. This may include inpatient, outpatient surgery and/or other outpatient services, and/or ED encounters (including charging related functions such as E/M levels & charges) in accordance with all regulatory requirements, official, authoritative coding sources (e.g., official coding guidelines), and all facility requirements.
In this position you will have the following responsibilities:
Accurately identifies/assigns codes according to the appropriate classification system for the category of the patient encounter. Completes patient discharge case abstracts.
Demonstrate and apply knowledge of elements necessary for complete, accurate, and compliant coding in the acute care environment (e.g. medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, clinical medicine, surgery, diagnostic tests, radiology, pathology as required by a wide variety of medical specialties as well as official, authoritative coding sources and facility processes, policies and procedures related to coding, and specialty specific coding related concepts (e.g. POS indicators, DRGs, ED charging, discharge disposition, etc.)
Interpret and analyze medical data based on coding specific guidelines.
Demonstrate and apply in-depth knowledge of coding/classification systems which are appropriate for inpatient, outpatient, and emergency care.
Demonstrate knowledge of computerized databases for coding and abstracting.
Perform accurate data entry.
Demonstrate in depth knowledge of health record content.
Demonstrate critical thinking skills in relation to coding and abstracting.
Query practitioners for clarification when appropriate (e.g. conflicting, questionable, ambiguous information is present in the medical record) and follows processes and procedures appropriately.Informs management of consistent problems.
Required qualifications for this position include:
H.S. Diploma or GED or equivalent educ/experience.
Medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, ICD coding (and, as applicable, CPT coding and/or knowledge of DRGs), and official, authoritative coding sources and material.
Any ONE of the following hospital/acute care related AHIMA or AAPC coding credentials is required:
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
Graduate of an AHIMA accredited Health Information Technology or Health Information Management program or self-study course and a passing score on the national certification examination for RHIA or RHIT.
One year of a hospital based HIM Department background/experience or experience through practicum of an AHIMA accredited Health Information Technology or Health Information Management program.
One year successful hospital based coding experience.
