The Coder Abstractor is responsible for the coding/abstracting of acute care services. This may include inpatient, outpatient surgery and/or other outpatient services, and/or ED encounters (including charging related functions such as E/M levels & charges) in accordance with all regulatory requirements, official, authoritative coding sources (e.g., official coding guidelines), and all facility requirements.
In this position you will:
Appropriately and accurately identify/assign codes according to the appropriate classification system for the category of the patient encounter. Complete patient discharge case abstracts
Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills
Maintain professional growth and development
Participate in all staff meetings and mandatory in-services and training programs as well as unit/department performance improvement activities.
Identify role and responsibility in complying with facility and unit specific safety and security policies, plans and procedures
Effectively and efficiently manage and meet essential functions, responsibilities and requirements of the position with an appropriate level of independence.
Required qualifications for this position include:
ANY ONE of the following hospital/acute care related AHIMA or AAPC coding credentials:
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
Graduate of an AHIMA accredited Health Information Technology or Health Information Management program or self-study course and a passing score on the national certification examination for RHIA or RHIT
One (1) year hospital based HIM Department background/experience or experience through practicum of an AHIMA accredited Health Information Technology or Health Information Management program
One (1) year successful hospital based coding experience
